Ismael Sahid was the first child to join the Afflicted Children's Development Organization (ACDO) in 2014. We found him in a small village called Crabtown situated in the slum area of Gbedembu, Goderich (near Freetown, Sierra Leone). He was twelve years old at the time. Originally from the Portloko district in the north, he came to Crabtown after being orphaned as a result of the Ebola outbreak. His aunt who lost her husband to Ebola brought Ismael along with her four children to the city in search of livelihood. On the first field trip by ACDO in search of vulnerable children Ismael Sahid was found sitting lonely and in tears. Ismael explained that he could not attend school due to the fees involved and after speaking to his aunt, Ismael’s situation was made clear. Ismael’s aunt, a fishmonger, was barely scraping by while trying to support 5 children on her own. School fees were out of the question. With the aunt’s permission ACDO took Ismael under its care, found a foster family for him and provided everything necessary for his schooling and welfare. Ismael, now 18, has completed high school and is preparing for gaining entrance into university with ACDO’s assistance in private tutoring.
