Vienna Hub is moving up a few gears, and is on the aquisition trail for members. Vienna Hub delivers happiness coaching for artists, businesses and cities. The goal is to coach happy people to become happier, whatever they define happiness as:- more performances, more sales, a CD, more revenue, more staff, more tourists, better life quality for inhabitants.... the list is very long and is an example of mass customisation.

In talking to some members it is clear that services are required. At one level, members want the best coaching they can get. We have some of the best coaches in the world. At another level members want some services to keep their business running smoothly, so that they can focus on their core business - for example an opera singer wanting her website updated regularly. To handle tasks like this, we have created the intern program - a chance for younger people to get experience, under the guidance of some world class performers.

“Let’s climb out of our bubbles, emerge from behind our walls and windows, computer screens, loudspeakers and headphones and open our ears directly to the environment. Let’s listen to “place” as if listening to a mysterious new concert performance or sound event. “Let’s listen like we have never listened before,” as the late Howard Broomfield used to say.

In a “soundwalk”, the listening “audience” moves through a place and the environment “performs.” The walking listener and the environment create a unique piece together that can only occur during the time of the walk. In a “soundwalk” we take the time to hear the environment: we are its true ear witnesses. And like any musician, the environment offers us its sounds for our consideration.

“Soundwalking” can be a way to deepen our relationship to “place”; to gain knowledge and information from the sound environment; to orient oneself in a place — especially in an unfamiliar one; to let the world in without any compulsion to respond; to be open without a need to define, intellectualize, categorize, or interpret; to listen without expectations, assumptions or judgement; “Soundwalking” can be a meditation: the world happens, the sounds occur and they pass. It can be a regular practice (alone or in groups).

A soundwalk is any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment. It is exposing our ears to every sound around us no matter where we are. We may be at home, we may be walking across a downtown street, through a park, along the beach; we may be sitting in a doctor's office, in a hotel lobby, in a bank; we may be shopping in a supermarket, a department store, or a Chinese grocery store; we may be standing at the airport, the train station, the bus-stop. Wherever we go we will give our ears priority”. Hildegard Westerkamp is a Canadian electroacoustic composer.

Abstract painting came about as a reaction to the five-hundred-year-long domination of realism in western art.

It has offered us a new way to 'see', even if it has opened up a space for highly questionable work that is without merit. Once in a while, an artist comes along 'who breathes a new vision into this genre'.

This is especially true with works by skilled painters who combine preparation with natural and spontaneous execution; Brian Lee is one of those rare painters. Today, the contemporary art scene is a wilderness littered with bad art and I define 'bad art' simply as art that is vacant of feeling. Lee's art is a refreshing call in the wilderness, it is alive and celebrates life, it is redeeming. His paintings are not ideas that are freeze-dried, aiming to impress academia. There is a genuine tie to human experience, which is quite natural when a painter is more involved in probing the essence of life, the invisible behind the visible, than in echoing the chaos of the world around us that is self-evident.

Brian's works are inspired by an integral sense of place. The places and realms he conjures up seem almost musical, where lyrical fields of brush strokes, form and color, give rise to a soft symphony where the occasional wandering spirit has taken refuge. Lee infuses these abstract realms with a deep, fervent spiritual feeling; spaces that are both real and imagined. Sometimes these places are very familiar and at other times they lay just beyond the depiction of recogizable objects, having gradually stripped them of any superfluous vestiges and where the 'realm of feeling' becomes paramount. The paintings become a visual music where rhythm demands richness but also terseness and purity. His paintings combine the denseness of oil paint with the lightness of air and the movement of water. Having blurred the territorial boundaries between abstraction and representation, he has made ambiguity a positive and central element in his art. We can call this ambiguity or we can call this freedom. In this freedom he organically fuses a dignified, confident manner, which is centered, with a powerful unrestrained momentum.

The artist's quest for insight into the essence of nature and form that underlies our chaotic world, has given the colors and forms in his paintings a strong power of communication. The language is honest, uninhibited and profound, the results springing from his palette to his canvas, sometimes with explosions of color. There are bombardements of clouds, waves and outpourings of molten lava. Waves roll and crash, steam rises where waves hit heat, combining forces - pulling and tugging; there is constant movement. But the paintings are always human, always more than palpable and full of feeling; the atmosphere of the place softening what would have been an overwhelming outpouring. It is as though Brian begins his work by constructing a creative landscape that literally invites a host of forms and feelings to visit; inhabiting his work like spectral entities and giving us an illumined message. In not just looking at Brian's work, but in seeing it, we notice how his forms begin to fuse, in different proportions, into 'One', like an alchemy of art, in which the spirit of one element transmutes into the next. Alchemy plays a strong role here: it is a tale of transmutation of the psyche as told through the heart.

These paintings are pure magic; the fusion of spirit and matter.

so here we are. spring is here. May 5th - already.

lets celebrate by getting together again at the MAK garden bar, outside this time to make the most of the good weather and connect with both each other and with nature.

some developments coming along, to share with you ..... it is planned to continue the vienna-hub socials as a good way to mix people and bring new ones together, but a more focussed approach to develop value in the viennahub community is coming along

from the start of "women with passion" in 2004, and "people with passion" aka viennahub in 2005, one of the key themes was connecting people with passion across art-commerce-sport-education , by promoting people with passion as role models, and by offering coaching and mentoring. the direction i see this taking now is under the banners of viennahub and blue sky stuff, a verein formed in NÖ in decmber last year. both parts will attempt to help people find and follow their passion , and to deliver the passion, one as a commercial operation and one as a non profit.

essentially, it will turn more into a membership modely, and there are a bunch of mentors and coaches (moni, john, petra, mark, claudia etc ) available to members. their focus will be in different areas, depending on need:-
a. Vienna-Hub / First Tuesday "ideas meet money" start up coaching for entrepreneurs, planned as YES! in NÖ - a series of "young entrepreneur seminars" in Mödling and Palais Niederoesterreich,
b. Vienna-Hub Talent Pool - developing and managing international performing artists, again working with a quality team of coaches and mentors
c. Blue Sky Stuff - intercultural educational development verein, which will offer mentoring and coaching in schools, for young people, for intercultural people, and plans to bring Vienna-Hub members together with these groups for the purpose of helping more people find and follow their passion through exposure to a wide variety of experiences and people.

so - immediate opportunities are to ask for a membership offer and an initial meeting or discussion with one of the team, to explore and evaluate which are might benefit you most... the idea being to get you into a regular small team session of 10 people with a mentor, following a process developed over the last years and piloted last november/december...

I was thinking of last night’s Amazing Dinner initiative. I didn’t expect everyone to be so charged up and excited about the event afterwards. People were genuinely excited to be in attendance, meet a lot of cool entrepreneurs and make productive business connections all at the same time. My job was done.
When I came up with the concept, I wondered as to what I should call it. Do I call it something generic like The Entrepreneur’s Dinner? Or do I just call it a get together and keep it low-key with the hype? But no, I had to get creative, create a logo, and start branding it already. So I picked, The Amazing Dinner.
But then, nervousness and trepidation started to creep in. This always happens to me whenever I organize something new that I hadn’t done before. I’ve been hosting and organizing social and professional events for years now. Nervousness and concern always starts to creep in till this very day.
I start to worry. I start to have thoughts such as; “What if it sucks?” What if no one comes? What if something happens to derail the event? What if one freaking moron decides to ruin it for everyone else?” Funny enough, they rarely ever do and it’s a rarity for me to ever have a bad event.
These thoughts are amplified when I do it for my professional network. I don’t want to lose face to them. I don’t want to waste their time when they can be at home with their family or at some other meeting. It’s my reputation that is on the line. I built it with every word I spoke, every action I made, and every deal that I brokered. It’s what is so precious to me.
These were some of the thoughts that occurred in my head every now and then leading up to the event. You know how I combated those thoughts? With the following below. And this is what I wanted to share with you.
Life is nothing without expectations. We could go through life and never expect anything from anyone and be perfectly content. Try doing that and see how little you will accomplish.
I decided to raise the bar high for this concept. To me, there is nothing more, well, amazing, then putting a group of risk-takers and deal-makers that I personally know and vouch for in one room. We sit down, break some bread, and create conversations around the one commonality that unites all of us. It is something that most of our friends will never understand about us. But as soon as we sit down, we already know how hard some of us had to toil to get to get to where we are today. There’s implied commonality.
Words such as nice and good are used in our daily language. We don’t know what it’s like to experience amazing on a daily basis. We just know that we’re “doing good.” Or we “feel fine.” Or that we think “that’s nice.”
But amazing? Forget about it.
We need to learn to set the bar high.
Some months ago, I recall seeing someone who was pretty amazing in her own right. She had all the qualities that I wanted in someone. I remember one phone conversation where she was on fire. She was dreaming of a better tomorrow for herself. I could hear that excitement in her voice and her vision. I couldn’t remember the last time I dated someone who was that excited and had amazing expectations of herself and her future. That unto itself excited me. She set the bar high for everything that she did in her life. Mediocrity was not in her vocabulary.
We’re so preoccupied with the daily rigors of life that we forget that there is something more spectacular just over the hill. We hang with a crowd that tries to bring us down. We follow a herd that lacks direction. We have to lead ourselves into a direction full of possibilities. We must become possibility thinkers again.
We have to expect amazing even if we get disappointed or heartbroken.
Life is one big project comprised of many smaller projects and milestones. Make a decision to take on a project and make it amazing. Develop an amazing relationship with your significant other. Have amazing friends. Find an amazing job. Make amazing money. Have an amazing night. Engage in an amazing conversation. Have an amazing kiss.
One definition of amazing is; “So remarkable as to elicit disbelief.”
It’s unexpected. It came out of nowhere. We are all capable of eliciting such a reaction from others if we really wanted to.
Make a decision that everything that you take on will have not just have a stamp of approval but leave people with an imprint of amazement. Leave people talking the next morning.
We don’t use the word, amazing, enough in our vocabulary. We don’t live up to amazing expectations or surround ourselves with amazing people or try to accomplish amazing things ourselves. Most of it is just mediocre. We settle.
So this was what went through my mind when I created the concept and title of The Amazing Dinner. I set the bar high with the name itself.
I had to bring in high caliber people. It had to be in a great restaurant. The conversation had to be fun and nonstop. Perhaps I set the bar too high. Afterall, how amazing can a simple dinner be? Well, judging from the feedback, it can be pretty darn amazing.
Wake up today with the decision that you’ll take on a project and make it amazing. Afterall, life itself is one big amazing project.
Live with purpose. Love with passion.

Jon Sass

... was born under the name Jonathan McClain Sass in the Bronx, and grew up in Harlem, New York City. As a celebrated tubist, Jon is widely recognized today as one of the most creative virtuosos in the music industry.

He began studying his instrument at the age of 14. While admiring Howard Johnson's music and following him around and listening to his mother's records and following the bass lines of groups like "Earth, Wind and Fire" or James Brown, with his tuba, Jon studied privately with Sam Pilafian. Other teachers were Howard Johnson, Joe Daley, Warren Deck and Bob Stewart. Within four years later Jon graduated from New York's Music and Art High School, presently the La Guardia School for the Performing Arts.

To date he has made over 70 recordings. Currently working as a solo artist, Jon has crossed over from playing collaborations with artists and groups such as the Vienna Art Orchestra, Boston Symphony-Empire Brass, Art of Brass Vienna, Circum, Austrian Brass Connection, Ray Anderson, Peter Wolf, Ricky Ford, Erika Stucky, Sud Pool, Henry Threadgill, Michelle Rosewoman, David Murray, Sunny Murray, Butch Morris, Leon Thomas, Vince Mendoza, Peter Erskine, Linda Tillery and the Heritage Cultural Choir, Howard Johnson, Arkady Shilkloper, Gideon Kremer. Feature programs together with Bobby Shew, Ivan Neville, Hans Theessink, Millagros Pinera, Wolfgang Puschnig, Wolfram Berger, and many more. Jon has also performed solo and recorded with Several Wind Symphonies. Jon has also written arrangements for the James Brown Horns.

A Nigerian born singer generally known as OLA! who spent most of his younger days both directing and singing in various choirs, found his way to Austria to continue his exploration into SOUL MUSIC . He is presently working with the choir in his church (Jesus House) where he worships with Hubert Tubbs who is the greatest vocalist of our time and one of the most present influences in his music.

" TRIBUTE TO SOUL LEGENDS", currently on tour, is an appreciation to MAJOR influences in his life. The tribute band features world class musicians and vocalists, who with a tiny amount of alteration, deliver these Timeless Tunes to the listening pleasure of "Motown Lovers" and at the same time make it appealling to newer generations.

He has had the opportunity to work with high ranking musicians in the Austrian scene, and hopes over time to meet the great music talents of our time. He looks forward to reaching new levels in the years to come and his main objective is to move people's understanding and change a lot of misconception of our time through music.

wurde in New York, im Bezirk Harlem geboren und entdeckte seine Fähigkeit zu Singen während seiner Arbeit als Konzert Tänzer mit der Alvin Ailey Tanzcompany. Er entschied sich an der Houston Grand Opera Production SHOWBOAT vorzusingen und bekam seinen ersten Vertrag am Broadway.

Danach wurde er Prof. Ronald Hedlund (Prof. an der Universität Illinois) vorgestellt. Prof. Hedlund arrangierte für Joseph Garcia, nachdem er den Wettbewerb gewonnen hatte, ein Stipendium an der Universität Illinos.

Zwei Jahre später wurde er für das San Francisco Merola Programm ausgewählt. Vier Monate später bekam er die Rolle des Komptur in der SFO Turing Produktion von DON GIOVANNI.
Danach kehrte er nach New York zurück und erhielt ein weiteres Stipendium für das American Opera Center im Julliard Conservatory.

Während seines Aufenthaltes begann er mit Mr Peter Sellers an einer neuen Produktion von DON GIOVANNI als Komptur zu arbeiten. Diese Produktion war sehr erfolgreich.
Darauf sang er für die Metropolitan Opera Competition vor und erhielt den Preis als New York Regional Finalist. Kurze Zeit später sang er diverse Rollen wie SARASTRO, SPARAFUCILE, FERRANDO, RAMPHIS etc. in Canada und den USA.

Drei Jahre später bekam er einen Festvertrag an der Frankfurter Oper für ein Jahr. Während eines Aufenthaltes in Frankfurt sang er unter anderem MASETTO. Zu dieser Zeit wurde er vom Theatro Communale di Bologna eingeladen um die Rolle des Grand Inquisitor in DON CARLOS mit Ruggiero Raimondi und Renato Bruson. Er wurde für ein weiteres Jahr für dieselbe Rolle in der nächsten Produktion verpflichtet. Gleich danach lud man ihn ein TOM in der Oper MASKENBALL mit Luciano Pavarotti zu singen.

Joseph Garcia arbeitete als Konzertsänger in der Carnegie Hall und als Bass Solist im Verdi Requiem.

In Paris trat er als Bass Solist in Rossini Stabat Mater auf.

( Ah yes, he did! ) Is it possible the world has moved from "time for change" to "change is here!" How can we embrace it ? Is it possible that a Vienna based not-for-profit can raise €19 million by 31.12.2008 and spend it all on books-for-kids around the world?

Is it possible to hold a fund-raising concert on a 77m high building in Vienna to celebrate the launch of Istanbul's year as European Capital of Culture, followed by a concert in Istanbul on a bridge between Europe and Asia?

Is it possible that a mere stick can be the most popular toy of all time? Or should it be The Mödling Stick ?

Is it possible that Maslow's 1943 theory of motivation / hierachy of needs is upside down and creates a bad visual that doesnt lead people to maximise their happiness? What if it was tweaked so that it changed peoples outlook on life ? What would that mean to you ?

Last time they asked me for a few words but I wasnt prepared, so this time I thought I would prepare etwas kurz.

Welcome first of all, to all of you and thanks for coming. Last time a few people asked "whats the catch," "why are you doing this" "whats it all about " - so this time I want to try and explain my vision for Vienna-Hub, the "hidden agenda".

I was at tthe globalCSR event on 27th, and someone asked - "when does ethical business that makes good business sense and a profit cease to be ethical business..... ?" Similiar with me, "when does having fun and making people happy, with a purpose, cease to be just fun?" Well for me, my fun really accelerated when I left corporate america and started out on my own, even though that sometimes isnt easy.

So whats my plan? Whats it all about?

It's about building networks and communities to connect people with passion.

It's about organising and running events like this that create value, and bring more fun into life, especially mine, my friends, and my son and his friends.

It's about a mentoring program to help people find and follow their passion, and to help them become more successful sooner . My role here tonight is a bit like I see my role as a father, as a facilitator. To introduce him to new things and to people with passion, to take care of him and keep him out of danger, and to keep one step ahead of him so that he never, ever, says "daad, i'm boooored!"

So, since we normally only have one life, we should try and make the most of it. I want to help you to find and follow your passion, to achieve success as you define it, and most of all to help you enjoy life and to be happier, starting right NOW !

So please, take your places at your first table here, and start "socialising", as if your life depends on it!

meet around 3 to 4pm at the posthof ( map ) to collect the guy from puppentheater and push it round and up through town, collecting a few coppers in the bucket and more spectators !?!

field opposite Bockerl "opens" at 5, with football and frisbee and rugby on offer. have a run around to burn off steam for the early birds and people helping build fire and put up tents, open beers and eat burgers.

around 5.30, braziers to be lit for toasting marshmallows etc

andre is running a proper burger and fish stall, with catering for approx 50 planned,
and we will get some crates of bottled beer in, plus iced tea etc. the plan is now to keep the entire night outside ( tent coverage in case very severe inclement weather. ) please dont be put off by reports of some rain. British and proud of it, there is no such thing as bad weather, merely bad clothing.

bonfire to be lit around 5.40, fireworks about 6.15 ish, bring a blanket , a seat, an umbrella ( and a guitar and a songbook !) for a singsong around the embers as they die down

fire, police and rettung already informed as the venue is officially booked this year - and we will invite some to attend for goodwill, we are seeking support from mayor, sponsors, and attendees

FIRE STATION - will probably be earlier in day ( iff on same day), to avoid conflict with fun and games starting at posthof and fireplace ( perhaps better in the spring when its warmer ? )

I have some tips for people looking for help in sales and marketing... One of the best books I have seen is Tom Hopkins - How to Master the Art of Selling - I have two copies ( in case I lose one )
( and I just see he has a website as well, I must explore that, and he has some great quotes . Gosh - I have just found him on youtube too !!, and some tips here )

7th October - Nige's Networking Notes

Vienna Hub Social Networking on 7th October

Is there a common theme? What’s the best way to use the event? Can I pitch my elevator to everyone? Is it in English? Whats the format.?

- these are some questions that have arisen, and I will offer some thoughts.

Vienna-Hub is based on bringing creative people together to create value. It’s a chance to make eye contact and press the flesh with people you speak to on the phone or internet. It’s a chance to introduce yourself to others, and introduce others to others. Netweaving in action. Pass it forward. Meet someone, find out there hot buttons, connect to them. Fast and deep. Ask them what their passion is rather than chat about the weather. See their eyes light up when they start talking about collecting goldfish or starting “the next google”. If you “connect” to them, cool. If not, store their info, and perhaps introduce them ( grab them , literally, and say Hey, theres someone here who has 40 goldfish at home/€500m to invest in your project – connect them. It costs you NOTHING )

The common things. Vienna. Expats. English. ( though of course you can speak German or any other language when chatting ) Creativity. Positivism. Optimism. Ideas. Warm hearted generosity. Friendliness……. ( speaking for my friends )Its a social night after all, be social. but dont be afraid to discuss business or passions either. but dont be boring.

As Bill ( Liao, as in Miaow ) said when Vienna-Hub Launched – “if you want to increase the social capital in a room/event, just go round a chat to everyone”. Be bold. Communicate. Talk openly and naturally, from the heart.

Before you go. Check through the list of attendees. (44 definites, 59 maybes ) See who you really want to meet ( pick 3 people you most want to connect to, know why, and do it. Ask me for help on the night – if you cannot find 3 people you really honestly want to say “hi, how can I help you?” to, then please don’t come….) , or pitch your product to. Pre-pitch – either as, I would really like to meet you tomorrow/today, will you be there, I have something of interest for you. Or, I see your interests are like mine, will you be there, can we chat for 5 minutes during the evening.

Also, don’t pitch too hard, or too early. Try the “how can I help you” route, it will work better long term. Connect first from the heart, find out if they need your stuff later. “People buy people”

When you look through the list, see two things. 1. Who else you know might like to meet some of the people coming. And who else might come along in order to meet both you and the other people there. Invite them all, there is space. Expand the group.

Again, Bill said November 8th 2005 – the Chinese see a glass neither as half full or half empty, they see it as an opportunity to fill a glass up. Enjoy the night and enjoy your life :-)

The First Tuesday forum is expanding its scope to generate intellectual property for the benefit of the entire industry. First Tuesday is an independent non-profit organisation that hosts discussion forums around various aspects of business and technology. First Tuesday is looking to expand beyond what it has been before by focusing on the content – the intellectual property – that comes out of First Tuesday,” says First Tuesday Executive Mike Wright. Wright says a strategy workshop will be held a few weeks ahead of each forum, with the first workshop, on voice over IP (VOIP), being held this month. The workshop involves a discussion of the issues, with the participation of vendors, industry associations, corporates, the media and government. However, the focus will be on industry's point of view rather than that of vendors. “That content will be delivered as a document available for download from the First Tuesday site,” Wright says. “At the forum, the aim is to build on that document so people already have an understanding of the issues before we begin.” First Tuesday will choose for the panel people it believes represent the industry best. With multiple streams at the forum, there will be only three or four people on each panel. The main focus will be on a panel discussion with the participation of the floor, followed by a networking session and finally a keynote address. VOIP forum The information generated at the forum will also be encapsulated in the document and be made available on the site. “We want to establish First Tuesday's intellectual property as the leading intellectual property on the issues discussed, and provide a complete reference guide,” Wright says. The VOIP forum is scheduled for 1 March, with the next event being Mobile Connect, focusing on the growth of mobile and data services. The preforum workshop will be held next month, with the event in April. The focus will not be only on educating the market about wireless application service providers (WASPS), but also on equipping and educating WASPS themselves. First Tuesday has also launched a new website to reflect its expanded focus. The new First Tuesday site will also be used as a tool for feedback and to generate input into the forums.
